QoS Data Visualisation with Open Nettest Dashboards

Introduction to Dashboards

One of the new and exciting features of the Open Nettest platform is the QoS Data Visualisation using dashboards. Dashboards are based on Amazon’s OpenSearch which is an open-source fork of a popular ElasticSearch and Kibana packages.

Dashboards work independently of the regulatory portal, even though the functionality overlap to a great extent. In this article I will explain the differences between the two.

Similarities

Unlike the Open Nettest public portal, access to both the Regulatory portal and Dashboards is restricted for authorized users only. Both portals provide useful statistics and reports based on up-to-date data and enable great QoS data visualisation.

QoS Data visualisation in the Regulatory portal

The main focus of Regulatory portal is to provide specific reports and data visualisations, as well as ways to simply filter and search for relevant data. It is not possible for the user to extend the reports or amend the visualisations.

Regulatory portal also supports specific workflows, such as measurement campaigns, which require several specific steps to complete.

There is also a section in the regulatory portal which focuses on configuration of test parameters and other settings. It is also possible to adjust the text of the individual pages for the public web portal and mobile apps, such as the About document, Privacy Policy, Methodology page and others.

For purpose of monitoring, it is possible to set up the monitoring landscape, consisting of sites, probes and monitored internet packages.

It is possible to configure automated alerts triggered by specific events, such as service outage in one or several monitored areas.

QoS Data visualisation in the Dashboards

Dashboard’s focus is on the raw data and the ability to flexibly create ad-hoc QoS data visualisation and analysis. The Dashboards come, however, with a pre-defined visualisations done by Specure. This can be considered as a starting point for your own work.

It is possible to create several visualisations based on different parameters and different filters. The visualisations can be organizes to dashboards, meaning one dashboard can contain several visualisations. The filters can be applied for all the visualizations on a dashboard and can be flexibly changed. The name of the product- Dashboards- is based on this very functionality of creating dashboards.

Another interesting feature of Dashboards is the ability to explore the raw data. It allows us to select a specific timeframe, apply filters and view the raw data in a Json format or a tabular format. If the tabular format is chosen, the user can select individual columns that should be displayed on screen. It is also possible to export the selected data in a CSV format. There is, however, a limit of 10,000 lines per export in Dashboards. Please note that there is no such limitation if exporting the data from the Regulatory portal, although the export there is limited to a pre-defined data view.

The regulatory portal and the Dashboards are a very powerful combination of tools, allowing you to analyse and visualize QoS data in ways that have not been previously possible.
