Poland plans to introduce a tax on VoD services, reported spidersweb.pl. All streaming platforms in the country would thus pay a new 1.5% tax. Among them also Netflix or HBO Go.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki mentioned a new digital tax in Sejm before Easter. As he did not provide any further details, the market originally assumed he meant a tax on big online players such as Facebook or Google.

However, the tax shall currently apply only to VoD platforms. Sources close to the government told this to the portal.

The tax proceeds shall support Polish cinema. They shall eventually reach the budget of the Polish Film Institute.

The streaming platforms will thus support Polish audiovisual production and cinema. This way they can help fill in the gap in cinema revenues during the COVID-19 crisis.
